Nothing like starting a post with a nice long title….
So I’ve been thinking about my job and what I do, and we have been just talking about some stuff on the young adult team, but I’ve really been thinking about how to minister to Young Adults. The interesting part about this is that we are a part of a very progressive church, so because of that when we have a young adult ministry, it’s typically not going to be more progressive then what is already happening at our church. Which, really isn’t a bad problem to have. I find it a blessing to be a part of a church that is seeking to change all the time, to continue to contextualize the gospel in the ever changing culture we live in.
There are so many subcultures out there though. Where do you begin? Who do you decide you should focus you time and energy towards and pray that God provides for those who you are missing?
Ideally, it would be amazing to have a community that would connect with all kinds of young adults. Not because the programming of that environment where the community is, is made to do that, but because the culture of the community is to be all inclusive.
How do you move young adults to be all inclusive? How do you break down normal social walls, that are usually solidifying themselves while in your young adult stage of life?
I guess these questions I’m asking, are really how do we bring a little bit more of Heave to Earth? How do we bring God’s kingdom now, in the lives of young adults living in Lancaster County. Think what it would be like if young adults start enacting the Kingdom of God in their early twenties? Think about the potential in their life and the beautiful picture they can paint.
There is a community of young adults out in Cleveland that are part of an initiative that has been started. Andy Sikora is a pretty cool guy who I have met a few times and whom I know through his brother. He and the church he is a part of, 707, have started Last Place People. Check it out, it’s a good example of young adults bringing God’s kingdom into the now.
Let me know your thoughts on this.
peace,
-A
